Sunrise, sunset, twilight and the Moon for towns across Elko County, worked out on this site from standard astronomical formulas (no outside feed). Times are usually within a minute of the U.S. Naval Observatory’s; mountains and canyon walls can hide the Sun and Moon longer than a flat horizon would.

“First light” and “last light” are civil twilight, when the Sun is 6° below the horizon. Moon percentages are the lit fraction at 10 pm. “Moon-free dark” counts the hours that night (evening into the next morning) when the Sun is more than 18° down and the Moon has set. A dash means the Moon does not rise or set that calendar day. Times change when daylight saving time ends on Sunday, November 1, 2026.
Dark-sky tips for Elko County
- Pick a moon-free night. The Milky Way is best when the “moon-free dark” column above shows several hours, usually the week around a new moon.
- Get past the town glow. A short drive out of Elko, Spring Creek or West Wendover helps a lot. Look away from town lights and give your eyes 20 to 30 minutes to adapt.
- Use red light. A red flashlight or phone night mode keeps your night vision. Keep headlights off once parked.
- Dress for the high desert. Clear nights get cold fast, even in summer. Bring layers, water and a full tank; cell coverage drops off quickly outside towns.
- Stay legal and safe. Use public land or established pullouts, not private ranch roads, and check fire restrictions before any campfire.

Calculated on this server for Elko (40.833, -115.763) with Sun and Moon positions from Jean Meeus, Astronomical Algorithms, checked against the U.S. Naval Observatory. Sunrise and sunset use the top edge of the Sun with standard refraction over a flat horizon.
