Chain rules for trucks

Nevada (NDOT signs)

Chains or Snow Tires Required

10,000 lbs GVW or less: snow tires, chains or approved traction devices. Over 10,000 lbs GVW: chains on the drive wheels and trailer braking wheels. 4WD/AWD with snow tires on all four wheels is OK.

Chains Required, except 4WD with snow tires

Every vehicle needs chains or approved traction devices, except four-wheel drive with snow tires on all four wheels. Carry chains anyway in case conditions get worse.

When chain controls are posted, NDOT and the Nevada Highway Patrol can also close a road to trucks or all traffic. Official wording: NDOT traction and chain requirements.

Carry chains in season

Nevada requires every full-sized truck or truck-tractor pulling a combination to carry, in the seasons when chains may be needed, one set of chains for each wheel to which power is applied (NAC 484D.420). Nevada tire chains must have at least nine evenly spaced cross chains, cables or straps (NAC 484D.220).

California (Caltrans codes on I-80)

CodeWhat it means
R-1R-1: chains, traction devices or snow tires on the drive axle, except 4WD/AWD.
R-1 MODIFIEDR-1 modified: trucks and vehicles towing need chains, traction devices or snow tires on the drive axle.
R-2R-2: chains or traction devices on all vehicles except 4WD/AWD with snow tires on all wheels.
R-3R-3: chains or traction devices on all vehicles, no exceptions.
TSTruck screening: all trucks stop at the checkpoint and must carry maximum chains. No permit loads over the summit.
THAll truck-trailer combinations are being held at the chain control.
TTAAll truck-trailer combinations are being turned around.
TTSSingle-drive-axle trucks pulling a trailer are being turned around.
TTSDSingle-drive-axle trucks pulling doubles are being turned around.
ESCCHP is escorting all traffic.

Source: Caltrans chain-control status chart. Under R-1, a two-wheel-drive truck already needs chains or traction devices on the drive axle, and Caltrans can also screen, hold or turn around trucks (TS, TH, TTA). See Caltrans winter driving tips.
