Lamoille Canyon Scenic Byway
The canyon road above Lamoille is a Forest Service road, not a state highway, so it does not appear on NV 511. The Forest Service says it is generally open May to October as weather and conditions allow, and it closes for snow, rockfall and construction.

Chain controls & winter driving
Nevada uses two chain-control levels. When signs are up, the rule is the law.
10,000 lbs GVW or less: snow tires, chains or approved traction devices. Over 10,000 lbs GVW: chains on the drive wheels and trailer braking wheels. 4WD/AWD with snow tires on all four wheels is OK.
NAC 484.240(1)Every vehicle needs chains or approved traction devices, except four-wheel drive with snow tires on all four wheels. Carry chains anyway in case conditions get worse.
NAC 484.240(2)Snow tires must be marked M+S (or carry the mountain/snowflake symbol) with at least 3/16" of tread. Nevada also approves alternative traction devices made of durable fabric or plastic that wrap the tire tread. NDOT chain rules
Before & while you drive
- Check NV 511 and the forecast before you go, and tell someone your route and arrival time.
- Clear all snow and ice off windows, lights and roof before driving.
- Slow down, add following distance, and use smooth steering and braking. Turn cruise control off.
- Bridges, overpasses, ramps and shaded curves freeze first. Watch for black ice.
- Give snowplows room. Never pass a plow on the right or crowd it.
- 4WD helps you go, not stop. It does not brake or turn any better on ice.
- Keep the tank at least half full. Gaps between services are long out here.
- Snow tires are allowed October 1 to April 30. Look for M+S or the mountain/snowflake symbol with at least 3/16" of tread.
Keep in the car
- Chains (practice first)
- Shovel, scraper and sand or kitty litter
- Flashlight and spare batteries
- Jumper cables, flares and a tow strap
- Warm clothes, boots, gloves and a blanket
- Water, snacks and any medications
- First-aid kit
- Phone charger and a battery radio
If you get stuck, call *NHP or 911, crack a window for air, and keep the exhaust pipe clear of snow. NDOT winter guide
